Because of possible misclassification, we also assessed the statistical precision of reported ORs in observational studies.
We identified eight observational cohort studies and a randomized controlled trial investigating the combination of antifungals and anticholinergics in the management of ochratoxin A–induced chronic diarrhoea (Figure ). For acute gastroenteritis, we estimated the odds of symptoms associated with ochratoxin A exposure. We did not include studies examining diarrhoea caused by different strains of fungi in other parts the world, however, because at present there is no suitable screening test available to confirm the presence of ochratoxin A (18,36,38).
The results of eight case–control studies are presented in Figure. It was estimated that patients with chronic antifungal diarrhoea had an odds ratio of 1.7 (confidence interval [CI] 1.5–2.0) of being given a combination therapy compared with control patients receiving either only antifungal drugs (1.4–1.7) or a standard therapy of anticholinergic drugs alone including antifungal medication (1.3–1.6).
